Video vault app for Android: what to look for

Videos are where a lot of vault apps cut corners.

Short answer

A good video vault encrypts the whole file, plays it straight from the encrypted copy without saving a readable one, lets you skip around in long clips and copes with big files. Test any vault with a long video before you move everything in. Dobr does all of this, with no internet permission.

What to check before you trust one

Does it play without a readable copy? Some apps decrypt a video to a temporary file to play it, then delete it afterwards. If the app crashes or the phone dies mid-video, that copy can be left behind. Better apps play straight from the encrypted file.

Can you skip ahead? Seeking in an encrypted video is harder to build than plain playback, and some vaults make you watch from the start or wait while the whole thing decrypts.

Does it handle big files? A few minutes of 4K is several gigabytes. Try your longest clip first.

Does it remove the original? After importing, the video should leave your gallery. On Android 11 and later the app has to ask your permission to delete it, so look for that prompt.

Where does it keep things? A cloud backup is convenient, and it's also a copy of your private videos on someone else's servers.

Is the lock its own? If the vault opens with your phone PIN, anyone who knows your PIN can open it.

How Dobr handles video

Dobr encrypts each video in 64 KB chunks with AES-256, so it can decrypt only the part you're watching. Videos play and seek straight from the encrypted file, and no readable copy is written to storage. You import through Android's own photo picker, so Dobr never needs access to your whole gallery, and it offers to delete the originals once they're safely in the vault.

The vault opens with a pattern that unlocks nothing else, and the app has no internet permission, so nothing you put in it can be uploaded. The free plan holds 35 items in one vault, which is plenty to test with your longest clips first.

Leave room while you import

A vault copies the video in before the original is deleted, so for a moment you need space for both. If your phone is nearly full, move a few big videos at a time.

Built-in options for video

Google Photos Locked Folder, Samsung's Secure Folder and Private album, and Android's Private space all handle video too. Our guide to hiding videos on Android walks through each one.
