Dobr vs calculator vault apps
A disguise is a nice extra. It isn't the same as encryption.
Calculator vault apps hide your photos behind an app that looks like a calculator. Some are well made and some aren't. Before you trust one, check that it actually encrypts files, check its permissions on the Play Store, and check what happens if you uninstall it. Dobr skips the disguise and focuses on encryption and having no internet access at all.
There are dozens of vault apps on the Play Store that look like a calculator until you type a secret code. The idea is that nobody thinks to look inside. We can't speak for every one of them, so here's what to check, and how Dobr answers each question.
What to check before you install any vault app
| Question | Where to look | Dobr's answer |
|---|---|---|
| Does it encrypt files, or just move them? | The app's own description and FAQ | AES-256 encryption, a separate key for every file |
| Does it ask for internet access? | Play Store listing, About this app, App permissions | No internet permission at all |
| Does it collect data? | Play Store listing, Data safety | Nothing leaves your phone. Purchases go through Google Play |
| Does it show ads? | Play Store listing, "Contains ads" label | No ads |
| Can it read your whole photo library? | App permissions | No. It uses Android's photo picker, so it only sees what you choose |
| Can a forgotten code be reset? | The app's FAQ | No. Nothing to reset |
If an app only moves photos into a hidden folder without encrypting them, anyone with a file manager or a computer can find them. If it asks for internet access, read its privacy policy and decide whether you trust where your files might go.
Why Dobr doesn't pretend to be a calculator
Disguises help against a quick glance, but they're well known. Anyone who has heard of calculator vaults knows to try one. Dobr takes a different approach. It doesn't hide that it's a vault. It hides how many vaults there are. With Unlimited, every pattern opens its own vault, so if you're made to open it, you can open a decoy and nothing in the app says another one exists.
Uninstalling and data
With any vault app, find out what happens to your files if you uninstall it. With Dobr, uninstalling deletes every vault, and there's no copy anywhere else. That's the price of nothing being stored in a cloud, so keep copies of anything you can't afford to lose.
