How to choose a photo vault app for Android

Six checks you can do on the Play Store listing before you trust an app with anything.

Short answer

Before you install a vault, check its permissions, its Data safety section and whether it has ads. Then find out whether it actually encrypts files, what happens if you forget the PIN, and what happens if you uninstall it. A good vault is boring on all six.

A photo vault asks for your most private photos, so it's worth two minutes of checking before you hand them over. Everything below is on the app's Play Store listing or in its help pages.

1. Does it need the internet?

On the Play Store listing, scroll to About this app, then App permissions. A vault that only stores things on your phone has no reason to go online. If it does want internet access, find out why. Usually it's cloud backup or ads.

2. What does the Data safety section say?

Every app on Google Play has a Data safety section. Look for what's collected and what's shared. "No data collected" and "No data shared" are what you want to see.

3. Does it show ads?

Look for Contains ads under the app name. Free apps with ads usually include ad networks, and ad networks tend to collect data. That doesn't make an app bad, but it's a trade-off to make knowingly.

4. Does it encrypt files, or just hide them?

Some vaults just move photos into a hidden folder. Anyone with a file manager or a computer can find them there. Look for the word encrypted, ideally with the method named, such as AES-256.

5. What happens if you forget your PIN?

If there's a reset by email or account, that's convenient, and it also means whoever gets into that email gets into your vault. If there's no reset, nobody can get in without the PIN, you included. Know which kind you're picking.

6. What happens if you uninstall it?

Some apps keep a cloud copy. Others delete everything. Make sure you know before you rely on it, and keep a backup of anything irreplaceable.
